DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: General strike points to problems<

The general strike called on 1 October was well supported. It underlines the need for a more astute social policy. The president of the IDB, Luis Moreno alluded to the need for more effort to improve the lot of the poor when he met President Leonel Fernández on 6 October. Moreno did admit that the positive developments in the economy meant that the difference between the economy as it was in 2004 and what is now were comparable to the difference between night and day.
